How much is my timeshare worth?
Many timeshare owners have purchased a timeshare under the false notion that a timeshare is an investment. However, this cannot be any farther from the truth as it is very difficult to sell a timeshare in a timeshare resale market that’s over flooded by timeshare resale companies and unhappy timeshare owners unable to get out of timeshare thanks to an ironclad perpetuity clause referenced in their timeshare contract. In fact, selling a timeshare is so difficult that the Federal Trade Commission has found that only a whopping 3.3 percent of timeshare owners reported reselling their timeshares successfully during the last 20 years.
If you’re looking to get rid of your timeshare, your initial instinct may be to sell your timeshare and make some money off of it. After all, you invested so much into it already, why not see a little return on your investment. The truth of the matter is that buying a timeshare is almost like buying a car; it loses value the moment you sign on the dotted line much like a car’s value depreciates when you drive it off the lot.
Depending on the season (peak season or off season), the resort location (beach resort or snow resort), and the number of bedrooms and baths (1 bedroom, 1 bath or 3 bedrooms, 2 bath) you own, your timeshare may be worth as much as 5-20 percent of its original price if you paid more or less than $15,000 for your timeshare. If you have a high-end timeshare such as the Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Disney, the Marriot or the Hilton, then your timeshare may only be worth 35-55 percent of the original price paid. In either case scenario, you’re still seeing a significant loss in the value of your timeshare, and losing a big chunk of dough on something you probably expected to see more of a return on.
Even so, there are still some of you who may have timeshares that are nearly impossible to sell. These hard-to-sell timeshares commonly include non-red week, or off-peak, timeshares such as a beach resort in the middle of winter, or a snow resort in the middle of summer. I hate to be the one break it to you, but the true worth of your timeshare can best be equated to pennies on the dollar. These are the types of timeshares you’ll find going for $1 on eBay or even Craigslist to those so desperate to get out of timeshare.
